The first official game of the season couldn’t have started any better. A 1 – 10 win, topped off with a beautiful goal from Alan. A great day for the team!

Imael Angel – Bad times
Sometimes a song sounds fantastic, but the lyrics are impossible to decipher. That is certainly the case with this popular track by Imael. I sometimes look up the lyrics online so I can recognize what’s being sung the next time I hear it. This time, though, the official lyrics bore absolutely no resemblance to what I was hearing, so I took it upon myself to create my own transcription. Hopefully it will be useful if you ever decide to sing along.

Ice experiment
I had to stop by IKEA anyway, so I took a few minutes to browse around and look at some products. One thing that caught my eye was a set of popsicle molds. We used to have these when I was a kid, and I thought it would be fun to experiment with a few homemade flavors again.
Idea: Everyone gets to taste each flavor and rank them from best to worst.
The flavors:
- Orange juice
- Apple Purée with a hint of Lemon
- Kiwi
- Cola
- Aquarius
- 0.0% Beer
The results:
| Ranking | Alan | Alex | Adrie |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 – Gold! | Aquarius | Aquarius | Orange |
| 2 – Silver | Orange | Orange | Aquarius |
| 3 – Bronze | Apple | Cola | Cola |
| 4 | Cola | Apple | Apple |
| 5 | Kiwi | Kiwi | Beer |
| 6 – Last | Beer | Beer | Kiwi |
Alan and Alex came up with some great ideas: a coffee popsicle for me, a vanilla yogurt popsicle, a stracciatella-flavored yogurt popsicle, and a chocolate milk popsicle. That will be our next experiment.
Quest for the right shoe
The quest to find the matching right shoe for our double-left-shoe football boots has already come to an end.
Not because we found the mysterious family with two right shoes, but because the store called us (yes, we are good clients) with unexpected news. Although the boots had been sitting in their box for more than two years, they graciously offered us a full refund.
It may not be the fairy-tale ending where two families unite their mismatched footwear, but it’s a happy ending nonetheless. We can now buy a new pair of boots for Alan, allowing him to finally become the star on the pitch as originally planned. As for us, we’ve gained a valuable life lesson: always check whether a shoebox contains one left shoe and one right shoe before storing it away for two years.
Left shoes
Sometimes you just have to seize an opportunity. In this case, we came across a pair of football boots for Alan. They were a little too big, but he was so excited about them that we decided to buy them anyway. The idea was that he’d grow into them in a few years.
That time had finally arrived. It was time to take the boots out of the box and let Alan shine on the pitch. Alan eagerly opened the box and… Huh, what’s this? A small mistake: the box contained two left boots. After two years, returning them isn’t exactly easy, but we decided to give it a try anyway.
At the store, they were still able to find the receipt from two years ago, but the boots had long since been discontinued and the warranty/return period had expired quite some time ago. The easiest solution I can think of is to hope there’s another family out there with a similar problem. A family that also bought football boots a couple of years ago for a child to grow into and, just like us, only recently discovered that the box contained two of the same shoe. Except in their case, not two left boots, but two right boots.
If that family exists, let us know! We’d be happy to trade one of our shoes for one of yours.
Businessrun
We had another company run coming up, and I’ve signed up again, which for me means a 10 kilometer run. Naturally, I’m hoping for a good time. My ambition was to finish well under an hour, and that will probably work out for me, possibly thanks to my adrenaline training.
Two years ago (in 2024) I ran the 10k in a nice three quarters of an hour. A year later (in 2025) it already took me a bit longer, namely 49 minutes. This year, who knows. I hope I’ve found my old form again, but it could just as easily go the other way.
Due to a small misunderstanding, I received two numbers this year. Instead of simply throwing one away, I came up with a clever way to give myself some extra motivation during the race. The route is 10 km, but it actually consists of two laps of 5 km. After about 1.5 km I pass my house, and again after 6.5 km. That gave me the following idea:
- Preparation: Starting in May I go for practice runs with Alex every weekend.
- Match
- I run from the start.
- Alex gets the second number.
- During the second lap, around 6.5 km, Alex waits near our house. As soon as he sees me, he starts running with me.
- He is of course still completely fresh, and 3.5 km is easy for him. This way he acts as my personal pacer and helps me keep up the pace.
- The result: I run the full 10 km but with an extra motivation during the toughest part.
My time/result: 0:50:31
Alex’ time/result: 0:49:54 (faster thanks to his final sprint)

I’ve started having a cup of coffee a day again. Instead of four or five, I now limit myself to just one. After my 0.0 month, the effect of a single cup of coffee is now very noticeable. After just a few minutes it kicks in: my senses become a bit sharper. I see better, I hear better, my thoughts are clearer. It lasts for a couple of hours, during which I slowly return to normal again. This will probably only last a few days, and then I’ll be used to the caffeine boost again. Still, I’m going to try to stick to one cup a day.
The other part of my 0.0 adventure was alcohol, and I actually didn’t notice anything there. Since I don’t drink during the week anyway, and only have drinks on weekends when we’re with friends, I’m going back to my habits before I started the test. A few beers on the weekend, and that’s it.
Conclusion: The only clearly noticeable thing was reducing my coffee intake. The adjustment regarding alcohol was quite easy. I did enjoy the experiment, so I might do another April 0.0 next year.
Coco orchid v2
I am getting better and better at creating beautiful coconuts with orchids.
First step, prepare the coconut: Saw off the top, sand the edges, and lightly sand the whole shell. At the end, I rub a bit of oil onto the outside of the nut to give it a slightly darker, shiny finish.
Then I make the base. I cut a piece from a plastic bottle and wrap it with brown wool until the plastic is no longer visible.
Next step, look for a good piece of tree bark. Usually I simply visit a forest with a few trees that have thick, cork-like bark and collected a few pieces that are usually scattered around on the ground. At home, I brake the bark into small pieces with pliers.
Finally the orchid. A local shop was selling cheap mini orchids for Mother’s Day. They were a bit smaller than the normal small orchids, but I suspected they would look really good in a coconut, so I bought three for only 8 euros each. I took the plant out of the pot and gently loosened the roots. They were usually pressed into a pot shaped coconut fibre mass; I loosened this a bit so the roots could grow more freely. I also removed the sticks that kept the flower upright.
Now assemble everything. First place some bark in the coconut, then place the orchid inside, and fill the sides with pieces of bark so the plant stand firmly. Then place the coconut on the base and turn it so the flower stand nicely upright.
I added a little moisture, and found a spot with plenty of light but no direct sunlight. That was it, quite a bit of work but totally worth it because I get a great feeling of contentment, and a job well done, whenever I see the orchid.
Guard of honour
Saturday we had another football match with Alan. Batan played against Viera, one of the best teams. The result: a very tough but brilliant win! We started badly with 0-1, then 0-2, but we fought our way back. 1-2, 2-2, 3-2 (Alan scored), 4-2. Halftime. Then 4-3, 5-3, 5-4, 5-5… and right after the equaliser, a goal straight from the kickoff: 6-5. Amazing. The spectators/parents went wild with joy. The kids even got a guard of honour as they left the pitch.
Don Quijalan
A Spanish masterpiece. Don Quijote tells the story of Alonso Quijano, a man so obsessed with chivalric tales that he reinvents himself as the knight Don Quixote and sets out with his loyal squire Sancho Panza on a series of misguided adventures shaped more by fantasy than reality.
At school, Alan had signed up a few days ago as a volunteer to read a page written in Old Spanish at the university. After a lot of practice, he was able to read his page perfectly today. We’re incredibly proud of Alan, who showed today that he really doesn’t mind being in the spotlight for a moment.
And of course, a TV crew was there as well to capture this bit of culture, and naturally the atypically blond Alan was chosen for a short interview.
