Exactly 10 years ago it all started with my first blog post. In 10 years a lot has happened and the most surprising was that each new highlight was more impressive that its predecessor.
What’s next? Will this trend of increasingly big highlights continue or not? What ever happens I’m happy to wait and see.
For one year my website contained a small line of text with a small advertisement and now my website is ‘clean’ again. The advertisement that was added to my website was just this line added to one of my old posts:
For sure you know them. The peanuts you like to eat when watching tv, playing free online poker or just when drinking a beer in a bar.
The post was about growing a peanut plant. I made a little over one hundred euros. Easy money.
After quite some years it got time to make some updates. A fresh new look for my blog with a little less fuss and a nice changing image in the header.
The WordPress theme I’m now using is called twenty eleven (2011), so I’m just in time, because I would not want to change to something that is already outdated.
In the recent past I was approached and asked if I would consider placing a link with an add on my website. At first I declined the offer but when they made me a better offer and explained the terms I got interested. Now, somewhere on my website there is a little line of text containing a little add and a link to the advertisers website. To find the add you will need to search a lot on my site.
I figured I had gotten lucky and the money I received I transferred to the account of little Pek, thus cleaning my conscience. That was it, I thought.
The next offer followed surprisingly fast. Another company also wanted to place an add on my website and politely asked my what were my tariffs for the various options. They were interested in these possibilities:
The problem is that after my previous experience I did some research and found out that in Holland it is more or less illegal to advertise any gambling related thing. Of course living in Spain probably make these rules not apply to me.

give opportunity to win prizes or premiums, if the winning takes place by chance determining which participants win and with participants generally having no influence, unless authorized under this Act;

give opportunity, promotion or have such documents intended for publication or distribution to stock for participation to items referred to under a;
Just stimulating gambling is illegal, and placing a simple link maybe falls under this scope.
I’ll just see what happens.
Snel verdient. In ruil voor een regeltje reclame bij een oude post op dit blog heb ik flink wat dollars verdient. Jammer alleen dat de wisselkoers niet echt gunstig is.
Ik ontving een mailtje met het verzoek of ik reclame op mijn site wilde plaatsen. In eerste instantie had ik daar geen interesse in, want ik irriteer mij mateloos aan al die reclame overal. Twee maanden later werd mij nogmaals gevraagd of ik interesse had en besloot ik toch maar eens navraag te doen over de voorwaarden. Hieruit bleek dat ze me een grote hoeveelheid dollars beloofde als ik in één van mijn 700+ oude berichtjes een regel zou toevoegen met een linkje. De kans dat iemand deze tekst tegenkomt is erg klein, dus besloot ik dat het geen kwaad zou kunnen.
De regel reclame mocht ik zelf aanpassen zodat hij goed in de tekst paste. Alleen de link moest een specifieke bewoording hebben. Zaak is nu om de tekst een jaar te laten staan. Het geld werd direct op mijn rekening bijgeschreven (en zal ik overmaken naar de rekening van Pek). Erg netjes.
Ik heb er toch aan moeten geloven, want iedere dag moest ik weer een hele rits links verwijderen uit de header en footer van mijn weblog. Nu heb ik dan de nieuwe versie van WordPress geïnstalleerd, en is het hopen dat mijn ranzige-link-problemen tot het verleden horen.
Foeter, foeter!. Het wordt ook steeds gekker. Mijn site was voor de tweede keer gehacked. De eerste keer was in 2004. Toen was de hele startpagina veranderd door een of andere drol. Nu was de hack subtieler. De header en footer van mijn pagina stonden vol met links naar allerlei geslachts vergrotende medicijnen. Echter de links waren allemaal onzichtbaar. Waarschijnlijk was de aanpassing dus alleen bedoeld voor zoekmachines. Ik merkte het toevallig en toen bleek al snel dat ik een extra wordpress gebruiker had en dat er dus een aantal files waren aangepast.
Inmiddels zijn de links verwijderd, maar voor hoe lang is nog even de vraag. Toch maar eens updaten naar de nieuwere versie van WordPress, want dat blijkt nu een te lang uitgesteld gebeuren.
Murphy’s Law strikes again. I thought about making a backup of my website just before I leave. During this backup I notices there was an anonymous user with access to MySQL, and this seemed weird. The account did have a password associated, but still, I deleted it.
And that was the end of WordPress. No more blog. 🙁
At least until I returned that annoying anonymous user… another thing learned.
