The lucky cat

Maneki Neko, the lucky cat!Thanks to Easyjet I have a little bit of extra money to spend. The first thing I bought was something I have noticed in a lot of cheap Chinese shops. It was a gold colored cat that is waiving its little paw.

I suspected it was some kind of good luck charm and according to Wikipedia there are three popular stories about the lucky cat.

The temple cat: A wealthy Chinese ruler was taking shelter under a tree during a severe storm. A cat from the temple beckoned to the man and followed the cat the in the direction of the temple. Seconds later the tree was struck by lightning. The rich man befriended the poor priests and they prospered. When the cat died, they made a little statue that became the first lucky cat.

The prostitute: One night the cat started pulling on the kimono of a prostitute. The owner of the brothel saw this and cut off the head of the cat. The head flew across the room and could just bite and kill a dangerous snake that was just about to attack. Of course, the whore was broken by grief at the loss of her cat. One of her clients gave her a statue of her cat to cheer her up.

The old lady: An old woman was so poor that she even had to sell her cat. A little later she dreamed of her cat and the cat told her to make a little statue of him (the cat) with clay. The woman was selling the cat statues and started a small business. The cats became so popular that the old woman had no more money worries.

Twee keer jarig

Heilige Ana!Spanjaarden zijn ieder jaar niet één, maar twee keer jarig. Een keertje op de geboortedag en nog een extra keer op je naam-dag. De naamdag is de dag waarop de heilige is geboren op wie jou naam lijkt. Vandaag is de dag van de Ana’s in Spanje, en dat zijn er nogal wat. Morgen gaan we het vieren met maar liefst 4 Ana’s.

250 Euro

250 euries!Dat is snel verdiend. Gisteren mailde ik easyjet met een bedankje dat ze mijn ticket hadden terug betaald, en een verzoek om de compensatie van 250 euro op mijn rekening over de maken.

Thank you for the refund of my alternative ticket. According to your own carrier regulations I am also entitled to a compensation of 250€ for canceled flight less than 1500km. Please transfer this sum to the same account used to make the booking.

Vandaag ontving ik een mailtje dat ze het bedrag inmiddels hebben overgemaakt en dat ik het tussen 15 en 20 dagen op mijn rekening zal hebben. Erg netjes van easyjet!

Wat ik wel heb gemerkt is dat easyjet een link in hun mails zet met daarin de informatie over wat te doen in geval van een geannuleerde vlucht, maar het is andere informatie dan die ik tegen gekomen ben. Hier wordt namelijk niet gerept over een compensatie. Erger nog, er wordt alleen maar gesproken over het terug krijgen van je geld, of het veranderen van je vlucht naar een andere easyjet vlucht. Gelukkig had ik de andere pagina eerst ontdekt.

Easyjet!Soms is goedkoop duurkoop, en dat blijkt ook vaak zo te zijn met vlieg tickets. Heel vaak zijn er al bij het kopen van het ticket sprake van extra kosten, extra kosten voor koffers, extra kosten om te mogen betalen, extra kosten voor belastingen, etc. Hierna is er sprake van de vlucht zelf, die toch bovengemiddeld vertraging hebben.

Na mijn vakantie met naar Nederland wilde ik met easyjet terugvliegen richting Nederland. Ook hier waren problemen met de vlucht. Helaas bleek mijn vlucht geannuleerd.

Het gevolg was dat ik snel een ander ticket moest kopen, om de volgende vlucht van Madrid naar Las Palmas niet te missen. Dit bleek een dure grap want het enige alternatief was met KLM, en dat was een ticket van bijna 300 euro. Maar goed, ik had niet veel keus dus heb ik dit ticket uiteindelijk maar gekocht.

Na thuiskomst ben ik begonnen met de communicatie met Easyjet. Eerst het online Easyjet formulier ingevuld met mijn gegevens, en wachten maar. Hierna verliep het hele proces heel erg eenvoudig. Direct ontving ik een melding dat met met mijn zaak bezig was. Een dag later ontving ik een bericht dat het langer zou duren, omdat de prijs van mijn nieuwe ticket groter was dan 130 euro. En vandaag ontving ik bericht dat Easyjet de originele prijs reeds heeft teruggeboekt en het verschil binnenkort volgt.

Erg netjes geregeld en het geld dat ik betaalde voor het dure KLM ticket heb ik in ieder geval weer terug. Nu alleen kijken of ik nog recht heb op een compensatie.

Een koffie en een peer-meloen

Tijdens en na mijn verjaardag heb ik flink wat kados mogen ontvangen. Boeken, bloemen en planten en van twee verschillende vrienden kreeg ik een koffie plant, koffie zaadjes en een peer-meloen. Hier ben ik natuurlijk erg blij mee. De koffiezaadjes gaan binnenkort in de grond, en de planten voorzie ik al geregeld van een frisse water spray.

Tsja, de koffieplant is een eenvoudig verhaal. Na mijn helaas gestorven stekje koffie heb ik nu een hele plant, met als doel mijn eigen bakje koffie te kweken. De plant is al bijna een halve meter hoog, dus wellicht heb ik al vlot een paar koffie bonen. Deze zal ik dan moeten later rijpen aan de plant, drogen, wellicht pellen, en dan roosteren. Hierna de geroosterde bonen malen en in het koffie apparaat. Ik ben heel erg benieuwd naar het resultaat.


Peer-Meloen!De peer-meloen
Van de peer-meloen plant had ik nog nooit gehoord, maar toch heb ik ‘m nu. De plant die ik gehad heb is niet zo heel groot, misschien 25 cm hoog, en er zitten al een paar flink grote vruchten in. Een van de vruchten ziet er al bijna rijp uit, dus over een paar weekjes kan ik een peer-meloen gaan proeven.

Behind me

After two weeks celebrating in London, Amsterdam, The Hague, Noordwijkerhout and one night in Madrid we find ourselves once again in Las Palmas. The holidays were very nice which was underlined by the fact that I did not think about my work even once. We enjoyed a lot seeing (almost) all our friends and family again.

Our first stop over was London. We spend four days in the center of London in a nice hotel and of course we visited all the highlights of the city. Big Ben, Parliament, Tower bridge, the changing of the guards, a ride in the London Eye and naturally I drank a good amount of pints.

Afterwards we visited Holland and we were surprised by a very fast growing Annabel and an even faster growing Lucas. We also briefly met up with parents, friends and family.

Today the holidays are clearly over, and I had to go to work once again. At work I found my desk covered in Spanish decorations. Clearly the Spaniards had beaten the Dutch in a football match and the Spanish emotion about this match was vented at my desk. Que fuerte!

Meester/Professor Berg

Tusclasesparticulares!Via een Spaanse website (tusclasesparticulares, betekend zoiets als ‘jou prive les’) waarop je een advertentie kan plaatsen om je diensten aan te bieden heb ik mijn eerste student Nederlands ontdekt. Dit weekend geef ik voor het eerst Nederlandse les. Gelukkig is het vanaf niveau 0, dus foutloos schrijven is voorlopig geen prioriteit.

Canarian day

Canarian flag!This Sunday the people on the Canary Islands celebrate. Everyone will be eating typical Canarian potatoes with a nice ‘mojo’ sauce, honey rum, fish prepared in water from the ocean, almogrote, and everything typical the locals like to eat and drink.

Of course there are little markets all over the place selling local products and to make everything even better the Monday after the party is a holiday as well!

Crisis prevention

The crisis has hit Spain as well. Unemployment has skyrocketed and about 30% of the population is without a job. At least officially because in Spain there are quite a lot of people working all kinds of jobs without paying taxes.

The most recent measure to improve the economy was a strange one. All civil servants will have to accept a pay cut. Depending the salary they will lose from 5 to 15 percent. The measure will be in effect in June or July.

Such a big cut in the salary is strange, but whats far stranger is the complete lack of information about this cut back. No one knows if the cut back regards the entire salary, the brute of net, extra hours, extra additions, holiday allowance, etc. Also it’s unclear how much will be the cut back… 5%, 15% or something in between… no one seems to know and there is no official place to get this information. I don’t have any problems, but my girlfriend does and with her a lot of civil servants. Unrest is clearly growing.

Knaak, gulden, kwartje, dubbeltje, stuiver

Guilder!Even though I now live in Spain I like to continue to collect Dutch coins. Luckily I’ve my family back home in Holland who don’t mind to every now and then pass by the post office and get me some special edition coin. The rest like the yearly sets I just buy online.

But now the royal Dutch mint has started a very strange action. To ‘honor’ the past they will create some replicas of ancient coins. Undoubtedly make some extra money, but the result seems highly undesirable. In the future it will be harder to know if a coin is ‘real’ or a replica. These coins are even made by the same organization. Fortunately the replicas will be made ??from silver, so the confusion will only arise with coins that were originally silver.

What is going to be the next step? Create replicas of entire collections of Dutch coins? Replicas that cannot be told apart from the real thing. I think it would be a wise choice if the royal Dutch mint focused on the current and the future and leave the past alone.
